Good Housekeeping

There are several reasons why you may want to invest in bathroom scales, but whether your aim is to lose weight, maintain weight or gain weight, accuracy is key. And these days, many bathroom scales allow you to track more than just your weight. The smartest models out there measure other health stats too, including body fat, bone density and water percentage. We tested analogue, digital and smart analyser scales to find the best bathroom scales for you.

The top performers on test are:

  • Best smart scales: Eufy Smart Scale C1
  • Best mechanical scales: Sondavia Square Glass Mechanical Scale
  • Best digital scales: Brabantia Digital Glass Bathroom Scales
  • Best bathroom scales for memory: Eufy Smart Scale
  • Best budget scales: WW Ultra Slim Glass Electronic Weight Scale
  • Best fitness scales: Fitbit Aria Air
  • Best pregnancy scales: QardioBase 2 Scale
  • Best bathroom scales for maximum capacity: Salter Max Electronic Scale

Different types of scales - which is most accurate?

There are three main types of scales: mechanical (or analogue) scales measure with springs and display weight on a dial, digital scales measure electronically and display weight digitally, and smart scales (or analyser scales) connect to smartphones over Bluetooth and can analyse BMI and body fat. Analyser scales are the most accurate and offer the most comprehensive view of the composition of your body. When it comes to size, a 30x30cm scale should be large enough for most feet without taking up too much space.

What can smart scales analyse?

Most smart scales can calculate body fat and muscle mass. They do this by passing a painless electrical current through your body. The scales then measure the resistance, or impedance your body gives against the current, as different tissues - bone, fat, muscle - will impede the current at different rates. Smart scales can also analyse weight, BMI, body fat, muscle mass, water percentage, muscle, bone, your resting metabolism and more. But, it's important to remember that these values are estimates. Consult a doctor for the most accurate measurements. You also shouldn't use these features if you're pregnant or have a pacemaker.

What is BMI?

Smart scales can usually calculate BMI, or Body Mass Index. This value is your weight divided by your height in metres squared. A BMI score is designed to help you work out roughly if you're in a healthy weight range or not. But this is an approximation, and a BMI score doesn't distinguish between muscle, fat and bone.

Which measurements should I use?

Make sure your scales use the measurement you're most comfortable with, as some from America may only use pounds, while others may only use kilograms. Therefore it's always best to check the specs before you buy.

1

Best smart scales

Eufy Smart Scale C1

These impressive smart scales calculate more values than any other on our list, measuring weight, BMI, body fat percentage, water, muscle percentage, bone percentage, BMR (basal metabolic rate), visceral fat, lean body mass, body fat mass, muscle mass and bone mass. And this wide range of values is all recorded and tracked in its easy-to-use app. It also connects to more fitness apps than other scales, including Google Fit, Apple Health and Fitbit, and can track measurements of up to 16 people. A great value for money option.

2

Best mechanical scales

Sondavia Square Glass Mechanical Scale

This mechanical model catches your eye with its striking glass platform, which means you can see the mechanism of the scale as it works. Its platform is the perfect size for those with bigger feet, and its large dial is easy to read. It's simple to recalibrate the scales too, as there's a small, accessible wheel that turns the scales back to zero. It's worth noting that it doesn't display weight in stone and the platform of the scale is a little high, so it may not be for everyone.

Best bathroom scales for memory

Eufy Smart Scale

The Eufy smart scale has the best memory of any we tested. Unlike most smart scales, which simply send your measurements straight to an app, this scale can also store 100 readings of 12 different values for up to 20 different people. This means that even if you can't use its app, this scale could record the weight and body composition of a family of 20 for nearly two years before running out of memory. Like the other Eufy model, it's capable of calculating weight, BMI, body fat, water, muscle, bone percentages, BMR (basal metabolic rate), visceral fat, lean body, body fat, muscle, and bone masses. But unlike the C1, it's not compatible with Fitbit and, because of its larger memory, it's also slightly more expensive than our winning model.

It's a great feature, because impedance analysis isn't recommended if you're pregnant - it does also have regular impedance analysis to calculate weight, body fat, muscle, water percentage, bone weight and BMI though. It can be connected to a wide range of apps, too. And there's a smart feedback mode, which shows smiley faces rather than figures. Its green display on a white background can be a little dim though.
